Focus: Arab American human services

ACCESS (Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services) has been serving the community for more than 40 years. Founded by a group of dedicated volunteers in 1971 out of a storefront in Dearborn’s impoverished south end, ACCESS was created to assist the Arab immigrant population adapt to life in the United States.

Why?

A “new” red state, following the election Michigan reported the highest number of hate crimes of states in the Midwest. Knowing the state has a vibrant Muslim community, this stat made my stomach churn when I read it as the new administration said they “wouldn’t rule out” a registry. I definitely wanted to support an organization that provides vital services to immigrants and would be prepared to protect them from the incoming administration’s dehumanizing and discriminatory proposals.
