Together, with like-minded organizations that advocate for women’s rights and reproductive rights, we are able to mobilize and fight together for the people of South Carolina.
I’m starting to make a list today of good things that happened in 2016 (it’s hard) and receiving the thoughtful responses of non-profit employees and volunteers around the country is definitely on top of my list. A huge thanks to Sarah Eldred, Communications Manager from Planned Parenthood South Atlantic for the follow up from last week’s post.
Why is it critical to serve the population you support in the state where you are?
For thousands of women in South Carolina, Planned Parenthood South Atlantic (PPSAT) is the first, and sometimes only, choice for health care. Our patients depend on the range of services we offer, including preventive services such as birth control, STI testing and prevention and well woman exams, as well as life-saving cancer screenings, and compassionate family planning and abortion services.
PPSAT also partners with community groups and organizations to implement comprehensive sexual education programming with teens. Our gold standard programming focuses on educating students and recent high school graduates about the importance of healthy relationships, safe sex and contraception, to name a few topics. Through these programs, students are able to learn critical information about sexual education in ways they might not otherwise be able to access.
What will Planned Parenthood South Atlantic main focus(es) be in 2017?
In 2017 Planned Parenthood South Atlantic will continue to focus on ensuring that everyone has equal access to quality and affordable health care services. We will fight to have our voices heard in the state legislature when it comes to women’s rights and reproductive rights, and continue to ensure that abortion services remain safe and legal.
While you struggle against serious challenges in a red state, what is something positive that those of us outside of South Carolina should know about the state or its people?
Planned Parenthood South Atlantic has a myriad of coalition partners across the state. Together, with like-minded organizations that advocate for women’s rights and reproductive rights, we are able to mobilize and fight together for the people of South Carolina. These partnerships allow us to come together under the same umbrella and form long-lasting, strong coalitions to combat the backwards legislation we can sometimes see here.
